Consenting and Safety Zone Information

Wave Hub was granted consent in 2007 under Section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989. This allows different wave energy generation technologies to be deployed at the site with a combined capacity up to 20MW.

Wave Hub also has a licence under Section 34 of the Coastal Protection Act 1949 (CPA) and licences under Part II of the Food and Environmental Protection Act (FEPA) 1985 for the installation of Wave Hub, its subsea cable and the stabilisation and protection of the cable by rock armouring.

Related documents are available below:

Developers coming to Wave Hub need to apply for their own FEPA licences. The Wave Hub Team will advise and support these applications which will be able to draw on the existing environmental and other baseline data.

Wave Hub will manage a co-ordinated programme of ongoing environmental monitoring in partnership with its customers.

UK legislation allows for areas of sea surrounding obstructions to be closed to navigation up to a maximum radius of 500 metres. Wave Hub has been granted a safety zone of this size around the hub unit. Customers will need to apply separately for safety zones around devices if required, and the Wave Hub Team can assist with this.

conference paper  on the lessons learned from consenting is available. A 2005 legal opinion on consenting issues  can be downloaded, but UK legislation has since changed in some asspects.
